Foam Roller

One of the most popular products at the Sports and Fitness Show last weekend was the Travel Roller Foam Roller. Similiar to my previous post on stretching I’m not quite sure if everybody knows exactly what they are doing when using a foam roller. Sure it’s not rocket science, as the name suggests you use one to ‘roll out’ your muscles before, during or after exercise. However you should know what you are trying to achieve when using a foam roller.

Self myofascial release is the popular term used by so called experts when explaining how to use foam rollers. I specialise in myofascial release and probably use these techniques in 80% of my treatments. When I see people using foam rollers it’s not at all similiar to my treatments. The most important ‘DON’T’ is do not roll the IT band. The IT band acts as a support structure for the hips and should not be rolled aggressively – loosening this support structure. However it does need attention.
